Religion: The children learned about the birth of Jesus and that he is God’s greatest gift to us. We learned the Blessed Trinity is one God in three Persons, God the father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The children understood that God loves and cares for each one of us.
Reading: The students read the story Time to Sleep written by Jill McDougall and James Hart. They learned how different animals like to sleep and the reasons why. The children also read the story What Do You Do With a Tail Like This? written by Steve Jenkins and Robin Page. The children compared and contrasted the different ways animals use their eyes, noses, mouths, tails, and feet. The students compared nonfiction and fiction texts. For a writing project, the children created a haunted house for sale. The students created a scary list of adjectives to describe their haunted houses. Using their creative imagination, they wrote an opinion paragraph, describing their haunted house and why their house is the best house to buy. The students also wrote an informative paragraph on the information they learned about bats from the story Bats, written by Gail Gibbons.
Math: The children practiced solving addition and subtraction equations to ten with part, part whole mats, ten frames, number lines, open number lines, number bonds, and Rekenreks. They explored the Communitive Property of Addition with cubes and counters.
Social Studies: The children learned about the rights and responsibilities of United States Citizens. The children discussed rules and laws and the consequences of breaking them. The children learned the difference between factual and fiction sentences. On a class trip the students visited Cheesequake Farms. They loved going on a hayride to select the perfect pumpkin from a pumpkin patch. At the end of the trip the children enjoyed walking through a corn maze.
Science: The students learned about the three different types of Energy: heat energy, light energy, and sound energy. The children completed the Gummy Bear experiment by observing what happens when gummy bears are submerged in liquids for a few hours. They discussed and illustrated the changes in the gummy bears. In a separate experiment, the Candy Corn experiment, the children recorded their observations and data. They dissolved candy corn in different liquids and discovered that candy corn dissolved the fastest in a vinegar solution.
